Race Report : Javelina Jundred 100 Mile Trail Race

We are going to try something a bit different with the race report for the Javelina Jundred 100 Mile Trail Run ("JJ100").  It will be primarily in video form.  Some of the videos are a bit long (but none are longer than 2 minutes and 28 seconds - that one being the final race review that will sum up the race as a whole, including comments on the course) and may get corny/loopy/strange at times (but we will blame that on spending hours upon hours in the desert heat).  There will also be a short picture slide-show at the very end of this post.

The very short and sweet version is that I finished in 26 hours 41 minutes 35 seconds, good enough for 46th place out of 147 starters.  Only 48.9% of the runners who started the race finished, showing just how challenging JJ100 can be.  I got to see so many old friends (including Bob Gentile, Leigh Corbin, George Velasco, Chris and Susan Pulick, Jamie and David Donaldson, Mark "the Naked Runner", etc..) and met and made some new ones (including Angie, PJ, JavaMom, Eric, Dusty, etc..).  Then there is, of course, Rick Gaston.  I can't thank him enough for pacing me through the final 40 or so miles, and dealing with the ups and downs that we experienced (Rick actually got hurt at some point during the night).  I also have to thank that entire crew that Bob pieced together - what a tremendous help they were.  Even David took time to make sure I had what I needed while Jamie was out crushing the course en route to another first place finish.

Before getting into the video report, a little background on JJ100 is necessary.  Taking place in McDowell Mountain Park (Fountain Hills, Arizona), JJ100 consists of six washing machine (alternating directions - clockwise, counterclockwise, clock, counter, etc..) loops, plus a so-called "halfaloop", on the 15.4 mile Pemberton Trail, featuring gently rolling trail through the desert.  The trail was a mix of sand, dirt, grit, and rocks.  The "halfaloop" is actually a 9 mile loop, which means that runners actually cover 101.4 miles.  There are aid stations approximately every 5 miles, at Coyote Camp, Jackass Junction and Javelina Jeadquarters.  The weather during the day reached into the 80s, and got fairly chilly at night.  Historically, this event has a low finisher rate.

Ok, so, here we go.  Each video will be preceded by a brief intro.  The first video was taken on Loop #2, about 17 miles into the race, when I was running with PJ, Chris and Susan.

This video was taken at the start of Loop #3, about 30.8 miles into the race.  At this point I am running with PJ.

This next video was also taken on Loop #3.  PJ had pulled away and I am now running with Susan.  The heat of the day is starting to take its toll.

This video is at the start of Loop #4, about 42.6 miles into the race and a loop before runners are allowed to pick up pacers (unless darkness comes first).  I am still hanging with Susan.

Still on Loop #4, perhaps 51 miles into the run.  Darkness has arrived.  Susan and I can hear packs of coyotes howling in the desert.

This video is taken on Loop #5, 70+ miles into the run.  I am now with my pacer, Rick.

Now on Loop #6, about 89 miles into the race after leaving the last aid station on the loop.  I talk a bit about falling asleep while running and hiking.  It is still dark.

This next video is taken on the final half-loop, about 95 miles into the race.  You can see the rocky section of the trail and can also listen to a funny story about stepping on Bob's foot.

This is the final video.  It was taken after we ran a 2.7 mile down hill stretch at a nice clip.  We are now above the 100 mile mark and less than a mile from finishing.  The video serves as a review of the race.  Overall I would certainly recommend running JJ100 if you have the opportunity to do so.

Finally, below is a slide-show of some of the pictures I took pre, during and post-race.

Javelina Jundred 100 Mile Trail Race - Bob Gentile Style

As I continue to upload the 7 or so videos that will make up the final JJ100 video race report, I thought I would share another video that features Bob Gentile.  For those of you that do not know Bob (of the infamous blogmyruns.com), he is quite the character.  I have the distinct pleasure of becoming fairly close friends with him over the past few years, and have personally witnessed some of his attempts at the 100-mile distance.  He always seems to inject the perfect amount of humor into these ultra distance races.

Bob brought it home at JJ100, finishing in 28:35:38, despite suffering thought some painful blisters.  So, congratulations Bob on your fantastic finish.  Everyone else - enjoy the video below of Bob's post-race visit to the medic tent (DON'T MISS THE LAST 15 SECONDS !! ).

Javelina Jundred 100 Mile Trail Race - Most Memorable Performance

In addition to the various other awards that the Javelina Jundred 100 Mile Race doles out (which includes best ass and best costume), an award is given for the most memorable performance.  It is called the Geri K Award.  It has yet to be awarded (as far as I can tell from the web-site), but regardless of which runner ends up with the Geri K Award, there is no doubt that Chris Pulick's performance was memorable.

Chris survived some of the most nastiest chafing (so I am told by his lovely wife Susan who also finished JJ100 with a stellar 27:09 finish) known to man, in the most undesirable of places on the human body.  We will not go into any further detail on that in order to spare our readers, but, the determination that Chris displayed in finishing JJ100 will forever be etched in my brain.

So, while you wait for the special video race report (which may take a day or two to load up all the videos), take a look at a very special video finish, featuring G.A.C.'s very own Chris Pulick !

Short Race Update - Javelina Jundred 100

Just a quick update as today is a travel day back to the East coast.  JJ100 was fantastic.  It was great to see so many friends in action, and to meet some new ones.  Amazing how hot the desert can get in the day, and how cold it can turn at night.

In a few days I will post a more complete race report, which will be mostly a video race report, with video clips taken throughout the race from all parts of the course.

As for time....a nice 26 hour 41 minute finish (give or take a few seconds).

Lots of thanks to my great pacer, Rick Gaston, who made sure I didn't fall asleep at 2 AM in mid-stride (by running 50 yards ahead of me, leaving me all alone in the dark with the desert wildlife - we all know how scared of the dark I am).

Congrats to Bob and Paulette for finishing their first 100-miler !

Race Preview : Javelina Jundred 100 Mile Trail Run

Off to Fountain Hills, Arizona we go for the Javelina Jundred 100 Mile Trail Run on Saturday.  Complete with a costume contest, JJ100 is the last 100 mile race in the 2008 USA ultra running season.  Starting at the Pemberton Trailhead in McDowell Mountain Regional Park, the course consists of six (6) washing machine loops, plus a half loop, on the very runnable 15.4 mile Pemberton Trail (see course map below).  The gently rolling single track trail through the desert is completely exposed, providing great views of the surrounding mountains, but, offering little protection from the sun.  The terrain varies between packed gravel, sandy washes, dirt jeep roads, and rocks.  The washing machine loops (alternating directions - clockwise, counter-clockwise, clockwise, and so on....) give runners the opportunity to see the trail going in different directions.  Each loop has approximately 800 feet of vertical gain and descent.

Loop Elevation Profile

There will be plenty of friends to see at JJ100 this year, including Bob Gentile, making his 3rd attempt at completing the 100-mile distance, George Velasco, Leigh Corbin, fellow Badwater crew member Peggy Gaudet, and Chris and Susan Pulick of G.A.C.  Also running (with a very last minute entry decision) will be friend and Badwater champion Jamie Donaldson.  If she were fully rested (she is coming off of Badwater and the 24 Hour World Championshiops in Korea), Jamie would be sure to give Michelle Barton (2006 JJ100 women's winnter) a run for her money.  Check out Karl Meltzer's blog and his post "...some scary odds at the Javelina Jundred full moon gathering" for Karl's thoughts and odds on who will win JJ100.

The race has a fairly low historical finishing rate, likely due to a few factors, including, the desert heat, lack of shade, runners going out too quickly, etc...  Never in the history of the race has more than 65% of starters finished, and last year only 49% of the 132 starters crossed the finish line (with only 20 of those 65 finishers hitting the sub-24 hour mark).

JJ100 gives out several awards to the finishers (in addition to the winners) - Best Ass, Congeniality Award, Most Memorable Performance, Top Team (best 2 person time....must be related), Youngest, Oldest, First Virgin (best of the JJ100 first-timers), and Dead Last.

JJ100 offers a live race-day web-cast, so you can follow along HERE !

Pink represents the main trail loop (6 loops of 15.4 miles).  Green represents the final, short loop (7.2 miles).  Blue represents "oops, you went the wrong way".  There are 3 aid stations (Javelina Jeadquarters, Coyote Camp, and Jackass Junction) - about 5 miles separate each.

Marshall Ulrich to Complete Run Across America Today

Ultra running legend Marshall Ulrich is expected to complete his 3,000+ mile journey across the country at some point today at City Hall in New York City.  Marshall started his trek in San Francisco on September 13 with fellow ultra runner Charlie Engle.  Injuries forced Engle to abandon the journey by foot (but he kept going by bike).

Make sure to check out Running America to read all about Marshall's epic journey.

Oh, and isn't there some sort of election going on today ???
