20 Miles of Fun Umstead Tapering - UPDATED 5:40 PM

I met Tom T., Doug V., Kristen & Dot for a lovely 20 mile trail run at Rockies. Tom and Doug are running Umstead 100 on April 5, so today was a nice taper run for them. We had a lot of fun, plenty of laughs, and I counted at least 10-15 times that we were able to relate something we were talking about to Bob and his blog (all good stuff Bob).

Back in February I posted a picture of a nice sized pig I ran into at Rockies (see "Pig ???"). I was amazed to see that my friend the pig (or at least some pig) had given birth. There were tons of little piggies running around. We also spotted an eagle. I made a good effort of taking a picture of it, but you can just barely make it out.

I'm going to try something different today and post the pictures from today's run in a slide show. I hope it works - enjoy.

UPDATE:

I had so much energy and excitement after watching Duke (my most hated team in college basketball) get upset by West Virginia, I threw in an hour of Plyometrics training. "Plyometrics is a type of exercise training designed to produce fast, powerful movements, and improve the functions of the nervous system, generally for the purposes of improving performance in a specific sport. Plyometric movements use the strength, elasticity and innervation of muscle and surrounding tissues to jump higher, throw farther or hit harder, depending on the desired training goal."

Runner's World published an article titled "The Plyometrics System" in November of 2003. There have also been articles published on how plyometric training can boost endurance running performance.

  3. Anthony ,

Awesome pics. I was in Rockies myself today, though I don't think we crossed paths. What section are the pigs in-hilarious. All I saw were six deer at the top of the Overlook trail loop.

    Really enjoying the blog.

  5. wow --sounds like you had a good run --loved your pics and am happy that the Umstead people had a good tapering run. They look pretty well rested. Scary that 20 miles is a taper. Rockies just looks beautiful-will join you sometime in the next few months!

  6. Pete - Thanks. The pigs were on the way to Blue Hill at Sone Barns. Basically, when you come around Swan Lake (going clockwise from the parking lot), you take a left turn up the hill (unmapped trail) and it takes you up to Blue Hill. The pigs were on the way.

    Mark - 69 degrees...I'm jealous.

Emmy - you have to come soon. I'm thinking of a hike at Bear Mountain next week after a run.

  12. Anthony,
I've been all through Rocky's but I've never ventured towards Blue Hill.
If you ever feel inclined to map that Rocky's 20-miler on Gmap-Pedometer and then post the link, that would be cool!

  15. happy easter! Lots of basketball talk in NJ at my family's (I have 2 brothers). I wish i could do a hike next weekend but the HAT run on sat is all I can manage. With umstead, the next weekend is Bear mtn! But we will fit in a hike sometime. I entered the bear mtn 50K but may go down to the 1/2. Only 3 weeks away for you, so a hike would be good next weekend.
