This Weekend in Running (5/3 - 5/4)

Marathons and more marathons. May's arrival brings an increase in the number marathon events, and this coming weekend is no exception. I will be pacing my friend Colleen at the New Jersey Marathon on Sunday, a place where I've had some fun times. In 2006 I ran this course with Dean Karnazes as part of his running of 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 days, 7 days prior to running my second New York City Marathon. In 2007 I ran a 3:51:55 here, a week before putting in a 3:40:16 at the Long Island Marathon (which is also this Sunday).

Some of the other marathons scheduled for this weekend include the Shiprock Marathon (Shiprock, NM), Prescott YMCA Whiskey Row Marathon (Prescott, AZ), Lone Pine Chamber of Commerce Wild Wild West Marathon (Lone Pine, CA), Avenue of the Giants Marathon (Eureka, CA), Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon (Cincinnati, OH), Cox Sports Providence Marathon (Providence, RI), Eugene Marathon (Eugene, OR), Fort Collins Old Town Marathon (Fort Collins, CO), Frederick Marathon (Frederick, MD), Lincoln Marathon (Lincoln, NE), American Red Cross of Monroe County Pocono Mountain Run For The Red Marathon (Pocono Mountains, PA), Potomac River Run Marathon (Alexandria, VA), and Walter Childs Memorial Race of Champions Marathon (West Springfield, MA).

There are also plenty of ultra events to choose from this weekend, including the following :

Miwok 100k - Beverly Anderson-Abbs and Scott Jurek highlight the field in this race that offers 10,000 feet of elevation gain and gorgeous views of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Harriers/Elk Beaver Ultras - Lots of options here, including a 100k, 50 mile, 50k and 25 mile ultra walk in Victoria, B.C.

Green Jewel 100k & 50k - A pair of run runs in Rocky River, Ohio with the "goal to promote a great park system - the Cleveland Metroparks - that provides runner, joggers, hikers, and bicyclists with miles and miles of all-purpose, hiking and bridle trails."

Colgate Peaks Trail Run - 25 and 50 mile options on a challenging 25 mile loop with 3500 feet of elevation gain.

For the triathlon enthusiasts, the Napa Valley Vintage Half-Iron Triathlon, Wildflower Long Course Triathlon, Wildflower Olympic Triathlon, St. Croix Half Ironman Triathlon, and New Jersey Devilman Triathlon Festival all take place this weekend.

Time permitting, I will put together a preview of the New Jersey Marathon, complete with a GPS map and an elevation chart.
