Race Report : 2009 Pineland Farms 50 Mile Trail Race

The Pineland Farms Trail Challenge is perhaps my favorite 50 mile trail race.  It is a challenging, but very fair course, and race organization and volunteers are exceptional.  The post-race feast is gi-normous (with plenty of beer, burgers, hot dogs, etc...).  The event also offers 50k and 25k options, and I highly recommend giving PFTC a go if you have the chance.

I went into this year's 50-miler with very, very low expectations, considering that the tail end of the flu is still lingering, and also considering the 60 miles of pacing at the Keys 100 last weekend.  At best, I figured it would be a good training run, and I'd get to see a ton of friends.  Wayne and I drove up to Maine on Saturday morning, and met up with my favorite group of runners, the folks from Gil's Athletic Club (G.A.C.).  I always seem to drink a bit too much when I'm with these guys, and Saturday was no exception.  Chris, Susan C-P, Lori, Cheryl, Pauls and the rest of the G.A.C. group hosted a pre-pre-race hotel room party.  Adam and Carrie joined us for pre-race dinner.

As to race-day, the flu certainly took its toll on me, but not so much until the last 4 miles.  I ran the first part of the race with Wayne and Susan W., but went ahead of them after about 6 or 7 miles.  The course is 3 25k loops, preceeded by a short 3.5 mile loop.  I was in great shape after 35 miles for a sub-9 hour finish, but the last 4 miles were tough, and I found myself throwing up twice and feeling a bit weak.  Still, I finished in 9:06:05, good for a 50-mile PR by over 21 minutes, but disappointed that I missed a sub-9.  Everyone else did very well.  Lori knocked out an 8:04:07, good for 2nd place female (there is no catching that girl).  Carrie came from out of nowhere to finish in 9:38:11.  Chris put in a strong 9:41:41.  Wayne set a new PR with a 9:37:31.  Julia (9:53:41), Cheryl (9:54:03), Susan W. (9:57:02), Adam (10:03:58) and Susan C-P (10:01:18) were all fantastic.

  1. Susan looks exhausted, NOT!!!

  2. Good job. Looks like a great race. ;)

  3. Wow, that's pretty impressive to PR like that while yacking on the course at the end. Great job! The running and yacking at speed should be great prep for Badwater, right? ;-)

  4. Oooohhhh that looks so nice and green! CONGRATS Mr!!

  5. Those GAC runners are everywhere. Well good to see the flu didn't take out your camera arm. Great pictures and videos. 9 hours isn't shabby and if you show up healthy next year you would undoubtedly PR again. Congrats.

  6. I admit it looks like a lot of fun, and it's so green. And who sets a 21-minute PR after puking it up in the last several miles? Only our Tony!!

  7. Congrats on a great race and PR! BW here you come!

  8. Great job on running a PR despite the flu! Must have been the fortification from all that beer. :D

This was the first year I got to actually run at Pineland, and I had a great time. I'm looking forward to the Bradbury series that starts in a few weeks.
