Weekly Training Summary (Badwater Training Week 2 of 10)

Week 2 was exhausting, yet solid, hitting all 11 of the planned workouts. My legs definitely feel the stress of the increase in mileage and hill repeats.  Herb joined me for both weekend long runs (most of Saturdays, and all of today's).  A 3:10 marathoner, Herb is slowly creeping his way into ultras (Pineland Farms will be his first 50-miler), and I get the feeling that he will be extremely successful at the longer distances.

AM - 8 miles in 1:15:31 - The left ankle injury suffered while pacing at the North Face Endurance Challenge 50 Mile Race on Saturday is still present, but is much less intense.
PM - An hour of core work and weight training.

AM - Hill Repeats (10), 7.7 miles in 1:09:18.
PM - 5.3 miles in 47:31 - Total mileage for today was 13.00, however the PM run is supposed to be at an "easy" pace to recover from the morning hill workout.  I struggle often to keep things to an easy, recovery pace, and tonight's run was a good example of that.

13 miles in 2:09:27 - Getting up at 4:15 AM for this one was hard enough.  Add in the wind and rain and it made for a long morning.  I ran the first 3.5 miles with my friend Eric at what seemed like a snail's pace.  Eric is recovering from last weekend's North Face 50 mile and was still super sore.  I was on my own after mile 3.5.  At mile 7 it was time for 2 miles of 1 minute at hard pace / 1 minute at easy pace.

AM - 5 miles in 44:59.
PM - Hill Repeats (15), 8.5 miles in 1:17:24 - Running in the evening sucks.  Well, at least for me it does.  Waking up at 4:30 AM, a full day of work, a commute home....sometimes the last thing I want to do when I get home is lace up the running shoes again.  I chose 3 hills of varying length (up to .25 miles) and incline, and did 5 repeats on each (running from one hill to the next in between).

24.25 miles in 3:59:07 - The first thing I did after finishing today's long run was text one of my best buddies, Brian these exact words "I don't know how I will be able to do ANOTHER 24 tomorrow!"  We are comparing training notes almost every day (Brian was on my Badwater crew last year, is running this year, and we have a few "Badwater bets" that will come to light in the coming weeks).  Felt really sluggish today, legs were tired, about 1,370 feet of climbing...but managed to keep a decent pace.  Already at 83 miles for the week with another 24 miles scheduled for tomorrow.

24 miles in 3:54:07 - Beautiful morning at Rockefeller State Park Preserve. 1,892 feet of elevation gain, and at a slightly quicker overall pace than yesterday's 24.25.
