Badwater Training Week In Review (April 25 to May 1)

April showers bring May flowers??????  Bring me some heat please!!!  Well, some warmer weather arrived in New York, but it didn't last that long.  What will last is the amazing advice that Ray Zahab gave me earlier in the week.  We had a great call to discuss my tendinitis issues and even talked a bit about training and gear.  What followed was a solid, 61+ mile training week...pain-free.  Plus, it was one of those weeks where I read one of those Facebook comments that someone rights that lights a fire under your ass.  Consider the fire lighted and training in full flame!

I learned this week that I drew the 6:00 AM start at Badwater.  With it comes the honor of lining up at the start with some amazing legends and friends, such as Shannon Farar-Griefer, Dan Jensen, Ed Kelly, Dan Marinsik, Frank McKinney, Meredith Murphy, Lisa Smith-Batchen, Marshall Ulrich, Art Webb, and Cheryl Zwarkowski.  I can't wait to see them all (and everyone else) in the desert in July.

Monday, April 25
5:00 AM - P90X Chest and Back and 225 reps of Ab Ripper X (I'm getting there).  Chest and Back is a pushing and pulling routine, with plenty of push-ups and pull-ups.  I have definitely improved since the first week of P90X (this is week #3).

Tuesday, April 26
5:15 AM - 4.20 miles in 37:10 wearing a lighter shoe (Brooks Green Silence).  Ray thought that lightening my shoe-load (among many other things) could help improve my running form and tendinitis issues.  I was psyched to have no issues with it on this short run, but I still remain cautiously optimistic about how it will hold up on longer runs.

5:30 PM - A solid hour of P90X Plyometrics wearing my Kutting Weight Sweat Shirt.  I finished drenched in sweat.

Wednesday, April 27
4:43 AM - 8.20 miles in 1:18:26.  Started off with hill repeats (4 x .40 miles), gradually increasing speed to the top of the hill, and easy on the return trip down.  Finished with 5+ very easy miles.  No leg issues.

7:00 PM - An hour of P90X Shoulders and Arms.

Thursday, April 28
4:49 AM - 6.30 miles in 1:03:35.  Back to the trails for a nice and easy run.

Friday, April 29
8:15 AM - P90X Legs and Back, and 240 reps of Ab Ripper X.

Saturday, April 30
6:10 AM - 22.00 miles in 3:22:53 (9:14 pace) at Rockefeller.  Really felt great today and kept at a nice, steady, talking pace.  About 2,700 feet of climbing per data on one site.  Finished off the month of April with 181.40 miles, with more than half coming from Umstead.

Sunday, May 1
6:50 AM - 21 miles in 3:16:34 (9:21 pace) at Rockefeller with Wayne P.  This second long run of the weekend served as a huge confidence booster to round out a very solid week of training.  Everything seems to be in good shape - time for the serious training to begin!

Totals for the week:

Running Miles - 61.70
Weight Training / Cross Training - 4 hours 25 minutes
Days Until Badwater - 70
